Technology in Prisons Settings Consultation Report Launch

The Community Justice Coalition (CJC) has been negotiating and advocating for prisoners to have computers in their cells for years. Technologies in prisons enable sustained connection with family, educational, legal, community, religious, medical, counselling, and other external services.

The CJC has completed a consultation with world experts and prison technology providers to examine the security, safety and benefits offered by computers in cells. The consultation focused on statements made by Youth Justice NSW and Corrective Services NSW.

In particular, we consulted with Australia’s leading counselling organisations to examine the importance of counselling to be provided external to the prison administration.

The responses confirm that: (1) secure technology exists to allow prisoners to have digital connection in their cells and (2) external counselling independent from the prison administration is more effective.
