Southern Cross University Now Open to Prisoners

Southern Cross University (SCU) is now providing higher education courses that can be completed by incarcerated individuals around Australia. SCU will provide learning materials online or through hard copy course guides for those with limited or no access to the internet. In line with the recent provision of tablet computers at Dillwynia and John Morony Correctional Centre, this reflects widening education opportunities for incarcerated individuals.

Students can undertake SCU’s Preparing for Success Program (PSP) to develop their study skills or make the transition to university easier. This can be completed in 12 weeks or part time over a year. The PSP is fee-free for domestic students and allows individuals a chance to experience university classes before committing to a degree. The subsequent degrees would be eligible for HECS-HELP loans if you are an Australian citizen or have permanent residency.

If you or someone you know is interested, you should contact SCU’s Equity and Inclusion team upon application to assess the learning programme suited for the corresponding detention facility.
