Allies & Friends

No matter how much we labor within our particular issues and organisations, it will be through the support links and networks we build together, that will allow us to counterbalance and overcome the resources of governments and entrenched bureaucracies.

The NSW Criminal Justice Coalition
Justice Action is a founding member of the Criminal Justice Coalition - a group of New South Wales based organisations and individuals working in prison reform and criminal justice. Its aims are:
1. to advance respect for human rights and freedoms
2. to advance just and effective outcmes in criminal justice systems
3. to advance community awarenessof criminal justice issues; and
4. to monitor developments in the criminal justice system.
The CJC participates in regular meetings with the Commissioner and officials of the NSW Department of Corrective Services, and with the Minister for Corrective Services.


Prisoners Legal Service - Queensland
Prisoners Legal Service provides legal information, advice and assistance to prisoners in Queensland and their families and campaigns for justice in the criminal justice system. "It is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law.”

NNCCJA
The National Network of Community-Based Criminal Justice Activists in Australia.

The networks' bi-annual conference, was held in Brisbane Queensland this year and issued a National Criminal Justice Policy Statement concerning their goals and targets. The statement contains contact points and strategies for the coming two years. The next conference is scheduled for Melbourne Victoria.

Prisoners' Justice Alliance
People's Justice Alliance is an alliance of groups and individuals opposed to the privatisation of the criminal justice system, specifically prisons. In addition PJA is concerned with the struggle to ensure the rights of people within the criminal justice system.

Their aims are:

  • Educate the community about issues which surround imprisonment and thecriminal justice system.
  • Stop the private sector building, managing or owning prisons or prisonservices. Focussing on, but not limited to, women's prisons.
  • Develop and fight for the implementation of humane alternatives to prisons.Prisons are soul destroying places.
  • Women and their children in the criminal justice system are particularly disadvantaged by the eagerness to use prisons before exploring other options.
  • They distribute a newsletter four times per year throughout Australia and overseas.

The Penal Lexicon Home Page
Information on matters concerned with prisons, criminal justice and penal affairs. Primarily the focus is on prisons in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The objective is to throw light on the twilight world of prisons and the treatment of prisoners.


UNICEF
The local website for UNICEF  although without specific details regarding Australian detention centres, contains a lot on what the Convention on the Rights of the Child says about the administration of juvenile justice. Material on mandatory sentencing will be added soon.
